ES Weekend July 19

ES enters the week with sellers holding the near-term edge, but the larger auction remains firmly inside a prolonged higher-timeframe balance. After ten consecutive weeks of consolidation, the market is no longer offering easy directional conviction. Instead, the opportunity lies in reading how price behaves at the edges of balance, especially as earnings season begins to take control of the tape.

Last week’s key development was not simply the decline. It was the failure of buyers to sustain acceptance above the 7600 area. After several sessions of stalled upside progress, Thursday produced the structural shift: ES lost prior value, broke the initial balance low, and began rotating back toward the source of the recent advance near 7480. Friday then reinforced that shift with a downside gap and a weekly close below 7562.

That leaves sellers in short-term control. However, the burden remains on them to prove that this is the beginning of a more meaningful balance rotation rather than another failed breakdown that is quickly bought.

The Bigger Picture

ES remains inside a 10-week balance between approximately 7247 and 7649 with a more immediate balance developing between 7354 and 7522.

The broader interpretation has not changed. After a nearly 1,270-point rally from the 6360s, an extended period of consolidation is both healthy and expected. The risk is that the longer this balance persists, the greater the probability of either a deeper corrective move or an upside breakout that fails to sustain.

Recent price action has reinforced that caution. Multiple liquidation breaks have been bought, which has increased trader confidence in buying every dip. Historically, that type of repeated success often becomes dangerous late in a balance, particularly when upside catalysts begin losing their ability to generate continuation.

When events fail to accelerate the trend, reversal next.

The market is now entering the most important phase of the July auction. Alphabet reports Wednesday, followed by the broader Big Tech earnings cycle and the next FOMC decision on July 29. These events may ultimately determine whether ES breaks higher from balance or begins a deeper correction.

The Weekly Pivot: 7514-7522

This zone marks the top of the immediate balance, aligns with Friday’s intraday resistance, and separates a routine inventory correction from a more sustained downside auction.

Acceptance above this area would suggest sellers are losing control and would open the door for a gap-fill rotation. Failure to reclaim it, or a look above followed by rejection, would keep the downside structure intact.

Bullish Scenario

A sustained hold above 7514-7522 would begin an inventory correction and target:

  • 7548-7554: downside gap and first intraday resistance
  • 7558: weekly value area low
  • 7578: upper value gap
  • 7624-7634: major upside pivot and prior non-excess high

The first move into 7548-7583 should initially be treated as a repair of short inventory rather than confirmation of a new bullish trend. The quality of the pullback after that repair will matter more than the initial rally.

Responsive selling from this area would preserve the bearish structure. Weak seller response and acceptance above 7624-7634 would materially improve the bullish case and likely trap late shorts.

Above 7634, the upside targets become:

  • 7669-7675: SPX ATH area
  • 7690-7698: balance extension and prior event-range resistance
  • 7733-45

A breakout through 7624-7634 that aligns with strong earnings reaction would be the clearest opportunity for buyers to reaccelerate the larger trend.

Bearish Scenario

Failure to reclaim 7514-7522 keeps sellers in control and targets the unfinished structure below:

  • 7469: poor low
  • 7448-7452: overlapping value
  • 7408-7415: prior weekly value and intraday support
  • 7380: key reclaim level
  • 7345-7362: downside pivot, balance low and major support
  • 7329-7336: potential look-below-and-fail zone

The first move lower is likely to test or repair the poor low at 7470. The response between 7448 and 7470 will be critical.

A fast rejection from this area would suggest the decline remains corrective. Sustained acceptance below it would increase the probability of a full rotation toward 7345-7362.

The most important downside decision point remains 7345-7362. Buyers have defended this balance several times. Another weak defense, especially after a lower high, would materially increase the risk of a larger breakdown.

Earnings and Event Risk

The economic calendar is relatively light, which places additional importance on earnings. Alphabet’s report on Wednesday is the first major test.

When a bullish catalyst fails to accelerate the prevailing trend, reversal risk rises.

That pattern has already appeared around the June FOMC, the July 4 period, and the latest CPI and PPI releases. Each event supported the bullish narrative, yet none produced sustained upside expansion.

For that reason, the market’s reaction to Alphabet matters more than the earnings result itself.

The prior FOMC range between 7472 and 7590 also remains a key reference through the remainder of July. Acceptance above it favors renewed upside. Acceptance below it increases the probability of a broader correction.

Final Thoughts

Sellers have earned the short-term edge, but they have not yet proven that the higher-timeframe balance is breaking. That distinction matters.

Below 7514-7522, the market remains vulnerable to a deeper rotation through 7470, 7448, and eventually 7345. Above it, the downside move begins to look more like another failed breakdown, with 7548-7583 acting as the first major test.

This is not a week to trade from conviction alone. It is a week to let structure lead. The prolonged balance, open downside repair, and arrival of major earnings create the conditions for sharp two-way movement and failed breaks on both sides.

The edge will come from patience: allow the market to reach the important locations, watch whether value follows price, and only then commit.

Structure first. Levels decide. Events accelerate.
